Over the past decade there have been considerable advances in
the understanding of autism, however the exact causes of autism
remain unknown. It is becoming increasingly apparent that
combinations of genes and environmental factors are involved.
Although there are many similarities in the symptoms of autism,
children with autism can be very different from one another. Some
children with autism are high functioning with language and
intelligence intact. Others may be nonverbal and/or intellectually
disabled. By observing the similarities and differences among
children with autism, we will gain a better understanding of the
many underlying causes.
The aim of the Western Australian Autism Biological Registry
(WAABR) is to collect detailed information on Children with Autism
in WA and to centralize this information so that it is accessible
to those who are involved in autism research.
It is expected that some of the discoveries made from the WA
Autism Biological Registry will contribute to our understanding of
autism and related conditions.
